Going Away with Training / Outdoor Skills Day

This year we are running two outdoor training/skills days. You are welcome to attend both days or one day or morning/afternoon.

Going Away with Training – Saturday 16 March 2019

Are you considering taking a residential qualification or just want to bring yourself up to date? Then why not join the outdoor team at the Hertfordshire Guide Centre, Cottered for a fun, informal day looking at all aspects of the Going Away with scheme.

Cost: £15 (this includes lunch at midday). Optional overnight stay (either inside the Hertfordshire Guide Centre of camping outside) at £10 extra.

We will cover:
1. Modules 1 to 4 of the Going Away with training scheme
2. Advice on other modules including programme, catering and health/hygiene
3. Time to have a go at menu and programme planning
4. Opportunity to talk with advisers about any residential plans you have

Outdoor Skills Day – Sunday 17 March 2019

To support the new programme and particularly the Adventure skills builders, we have organised a camp skills and fire skills day. This will be a relaxed day giving Leaders of all sections a chance to light fires, pitch tents and try out skills builder activities.

Cost: £15 (includes food for firelighting activities).  You will need a packed lunch.

There will be 2 sessions:

Firelighting and cooking

  • Backwoods cooking (Camp Skills Builder 6 and Guide interest badge)
  • Firelighting and cooking on fires (Camp Skills Builder 2,3, 4)
  • Camp oven (Camp Skills Builder 5)

Camp skills

  • Tent pitching (Camp Skills Builder 2, 4)
  • Gadgets/lightweight pioneering (Camp Skills Builder 3, 6)
  • Camp layout (Skills Builder 4)
  • Bedding rolls (Camp Skills Builder 3)
  • Tent repairs (Camp Skills Builder 5)
