About Us

Hertfordshire is a wonderful guiding County of over 11,500 members. Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, members of The Senior Section, and volunteers who enable every young member to develop their potential and be their best. We offer a full and varied programme to the girls in a safe, girl only space.

There are lots of exciting opportunities including the outdoors, international opportunities and trips abroad. Many committed volunteers make all of this happen. Whether girl or adult come and join us, have fun and make lifelong friends. Watch the Discover Guiding video to find out more.

Girlguiding Hertfordshire the Beginnings…

When Lord Baden-Powell asked his sister Agnes to do 'something for the girls', he could never have foreseen what effect those words would have on the lives of the young women of the country.

Agnes placed an advertisement in a number of newspapers, one of which was the Watford Observer. The advert was answered by Miss D. Birch (later Mrs. Burns) who discovered from Miss Baden-Powell what had to be done to start a Guide Company.

First, Miss Birch had to call upon a number of prominent ladies in the town explaining her ideas, until she had persuaded eight ladies to sign up as the girls’ committee. This could take quite a long time, as often the idea had to be explained several times over before the ladies would agree.

It all obviously took root and after other companies started up, by 1914 there were enough to ensure that the County could be registered at what became known as Commonwealth Headquarters in Buckingham Palace Road, London.

Hertfordshire’s first County Commissioner was Lady Carrick who served for 4 years. From 1919 to the present, no fewer than 16 County Commissioners have given their loyal service to Hertfordshire.

Girls Can Do Anything!

17/07/17

Hertfordshire Guides were inspired and motivated to speak out about key issues that they care about when Oliver Dowden CBE, member of Parliament (MP) for Hertsmere, came to visit them at Morven, Potters Bar as part of the Great Patrol Hunt competition. The Guides were delighted to welcome Oliver to their camp who spoke to them about his route to becoming an MP and the campaigns that he has been involved in. It was a tremendous opportunity to talk directly to a politician and to feel listened to. Oliver led a debating workshop that supported the girls on how to present a persuasive dialogue for

BP Adventure Winter Surprise

18/11/16

On Saturday 12th November 19 guides met at Northern Heights for the BP Adventure Winter Surprise. Most of the girls didn't know each other but soon got stuck in (literally!) making snowmen out of balloons, wool and lots and lots of glue (plus a few secret ingredients!). The laughter and friendship soon started and continued throughout the weekend as they embarked on some confectionary making, cake decorating (and eating - no one seemed too upset biting into Santa's face!) and candle work. After dinner (Christmas dinner of course) the girls made props for their own photo booth and then practiced

A course to use it is not necessary but can be helpful and your 1st Response Course or refresher should include defibrillators.  Leaders would be expected to follow usual procedure for a non breathing person: call ambulance, start CPR, then someone should get the defibrillator and open the lid for instructions to greatly improve chances of survival. We are still raising money to buy and fit a
