The Story Behind The Hertfordshire Standard.

The Hertfordshire County Standard was dedicated on 6th June 1948 in St.Albans Abbey.
The decision to have a County standard was first taken in 1938 and the cost was not to exceed £10!!

The advent of the Second World War meant the postponement of the project, but the Standard was finally made to a design by Mrs Wolverley Fordham, a former County Commissioner. The silk fabric was given by Mrs Humphrey Haslam, and the Standard was embroidered by Mrs Sidney Clarke. The Hon. Mrs Serecold and Mrs Dymoke Green also gave substantial help to the project.

The original spelling of Hertford was Hartforde and the County emblem of a hart on a ford appeared on the seal of Hertford from mediaeval times.

Hertfordshire Guides adopted the emblem for their badge in 1922.

Her Majesty the Queen Mother had strong connections with Hertfordshire and graciously gave her permission for her initial, intertwined with a crown to form part of the Standard's insignia.
